The objectives of the North Cumberland Historical Society are:

• to collect, archive, publish, and make available to the public, historical and genealogical information of the North Cumberland area.
• to provide a research facility for genealogists, historians and other researchers.

The society has a collection of family files, research reference materials, maps, charts and photos.

In 1890 sixty-seven miles of track was completed between Oxford Junction and Pictou as well as nearly five miles of track between Pugwash and Pugwash Junction by the Intercolonial Railway with the Pugwash Train Station as one of five stops on the branch line.


Sir Sanford Fleming was the architect of the building which is of brick construction - restrained gothic style, two stories, cross gable roof with 6 hip gable dormers and decorative faces. Rhodes & Curry of Amherst were the builders.

It is one of the earliest surviving types in Canada. On August 1, 1998 the station was registered as a Heritage Property by the Municipality of the County of Cumberland and suitably plaqued.
